I looked over my shoulder out my office window here in lovely Madison, WI and noticed, "oh hey look it's snowing." Here is a video of a bunch of cars driving by and not crashing into anything.
(While I'm bragging about our ability to not die in snow here, I'm still jealous of your barbecue, fried chicken, sweet tea, grits and biscuits.)

Yes but you're used to having these conditions. I'm from Ohio but now live in Tennessee. It's totally different here. No one has any reason to buy winter tires, and there isn't a huge supply of road salt. When the snow hit, they weren't expecting it so the roads were very icy and no one knows how to drive anyway, so in the snow and ice you can't expect much.

I drove all the way back from work Tuesday on snow and all the way to work Wednesday on snow in a heavy RWD, then again I'm more of a hillbilly than a redneck.

How much of that is 2" of ice? It wasn't the snow that was the problem, it was the ice.

I love the argument: it wasn't snow it was ICE!!
Cause you know we're completely unfamiliar with ice in the northlands...

Ehh looking out there now I'd say there's like an inch of snow. But this is like, we don't even flinch at this.
But don't mind me, I'm just trying to lightheartedly troll y'all a little bit.

I wish I could do the same. I'm going slightly stir crazy with winter, particularly since we've been getting these -10 F or worse temps with the damn polar vortex. Today it's a balmy 26 F! I didn't even bother with my thickest coat today. My gf's taking the weather a bit worse, all I hear out of her is "when are we going on vacation?"

The very southern-most part of Ontario, like down by Detroit, is actually a bit south of Madison. But nobody says "eh" here. We say "yahhh." Except not me, since I'm a transplant not a native Wisconsinite.

Hey fellow Cheesehead,
How many times on your way to work did you think to yourself "oh shit ohshitohshitohshit snow i'm going to die!!!!"?
I'm sorry folks. We have salt and cheese brine on our roads and temperatures were so cold this past week that neither of those two would have an effect on the ice. Enough of this "we're not prepared" shit. That's how the Romans were conquered... or something like that.

Before I left home in the morning I looked at the forecast on my phone and saw snow. My reaction: better wear my more-waterproof, less-stylish boots today.

I managed 26 miles with a FWD on 2 inch thick sheet ice.
And I didn't hit anything. Nor was I hit.

Piece of cake! I'd actually prefer zero salt.
It's dumping up here in the northern parts.

The following is in now way any kind of personal attack, just a suggestion to perhaps reconsider your viewpoint based on a few factors.
While I understand your point, I hope you consider most of these people drive terribly under fair weather conditions anyway. Lots of entitled drivers around these parts. Lots.
Add to the fact that none of them ever had a chance like many of you did to grow up driving in these conditions, never had a chance to practice in it, no one to actually show them how to drive in it, or they've never traveled to a place where they'd be forced to adjust to it. None of us opposauruses were born with our current driving abilities, someone (hopefully) was kind enough to teach us.
That type of weather is something they're very, very rarely exposed to. It's so incredibly rare that when it does happen, it's utter chaos. One wreck can shut down entire interstates and highways and people don't have the common sense to move over to allow emergency crews access to start clearing the roads. But for the people stuck in a traffic jam, it's the same as if the weather were clear, it's not their fault they are stuck there. Granted, I don't condone abandoning your car, but holy cow, I can't imagine being stuck idle for hours on end. I think I'd go stir crazy and have to start chatting up those around me.
Also, I've seen people advocating snow tires. Um, no. Why would we drop a few hundred bucks for something we might use a couple of days every few years. You (not you individually) think snow tires would have saved these people? Yeah right. You could give some of these folks tank tracks and the outcome would remain the same due to the factors I previously listed. Like I said, it's so rare that the tires would probably dry rot before they ever were properly worn.
Just my two cents.

Oh, that makes sense.
I imagine having that much ICE on would make it hard to drive

Due to the tendency for many Southerners to react to perceived slights with threats of physical violence, you are wise to leaven your comments with praise for our delicious comestables, which unlike seasonable driving superiority, we enjoy year-round. :-D

I hear ya.
It's really easy and tempting to be mean to you guys down south with this kind of thing. It's especially a dick move when people are getting hurt or stranded. Still it's hard not to poke holes in defenses with this situation. I didn't mean to offend (too much) stay safe.

Nah, I get it. It's like making fun of Florida... For being Florida.
And you didn't offend whatsoever. Thanks for the kind response. Wasn't sure if I was about to be toasted in this thread.
I guess my point is sorta kinda maybe similar to this: My earliest memory of driving was on a tractor with my dad sitting behind me as I stood barely reaching the wheel and pedals. I can drive one to this day because someone showed me how.
I also can drive on ice and snow because I have common sense and I've been to places that have this type of weather. Therein lies the problem. Most people around here severely lack common sense under normal circumstances, add snow and ice and you've got a big recipe for stupid.

I know it's a touchy subject, but I have to say, as a former resident of Madison, I didn't actually find it that challenging to drive around there vs. warmer cities that get a couple of days of snow a year. I don't mean just the fact that other drivers were more experienced with winter driving, although that helped. The roads themselves just weren't as difficult to drive on as they are when we get a cold snap here in New Mexico. As best as I can figure, it's because ice actually provides better traction in bitterly cold temperatures, than ice that fluctuates between freezing and slightly melting.

I think a lot of it is because the city is well prepared for snowy weather. It dropped maybe 1-2 inches and now with all the accumulated salt on the roads, it looks like this, even though the temp right now is 25.

Yes undoubtedly. I dunno, I just wanted to offer a bit of a counterpoint to the ribbing southerners are getting lately. Winter driving up north is challenging, for sure, but conditions down south have their own challenges that might well confound any driver!
